The Lionhead varies considerably in different localities. They all share the same characteristics of a short, oval body, a gentle curve along their dorsal-fin-less back, very short fins, and headgrowth so large in some highly-developed Chinese breeds, that it appears that the fish has a bigger head than its body. The large head has given its name the "lion" head. The head development of the Lion Head can have different shapes and sizes and the fish length varies from 3 to 8 inches. Common Lion Head colors are red, red/white and calico. For reasons unknown, the calico generally has a smaller head than other colors. Once in a while some good jet black lionheads can be found but is very rare.
